If you don’t see your question here, get in touch — we’re happy to help you plan your print, scan or artwork drop-off.

Not sure where to start? You’re not alone — and we’re happy to help. We’ve organised these FAQs into general questions and service-specific sections for printing, scanning and artwork photography.

General

What is giclée printing?

Giclée is a high-resolution inkjet print made with archival pigment inks on fine art paper. It’s widely used for photographic and artwork editions because it can deliver excellent detail, smooth tonal range and long-term stability.

Isn’t C-type better than giclée?

Not necessarily — they’re different processes. C-type (chromogenic) prints are made on light-sensitive photographic paper and can suit certain photographic aesthetics. Giclée pigment prints offer a wider choice of fine art papers, strong archival performance and superb colour and detail. If you’re unsure which is best for your image, tell us the look you want and where the print will be displayed and we’ll advise.

What files do you accept?

We accept JPEG and TIFF (and usually PDF for certain artwork files). If you’re working in Photoshop/Lightroom, exporting a high-quality JPEG is often fine. For editions or complex work, TIFF can be useful.

Do you check my file before printing?

Yes — we check basics like resolution, sizing, colour profile and borders. If anything is likely to affect print quality, we’ll contact you before printing.

How should I prepare my artwork for the best result?

If possible, supply the final crop and orientation, and include any border requirements. If you’re not sure, send what you have — we can help you choose the best approach.

Do you charge for set-up ie correct print size?

There is no charge for set-up.

How long does it take?

Turnaround varies by service and workload. If you have a deadline, tell us upfront and we’ll confirm what’s realistic.
Also see Deliver (below)

Do you deliver?

Yes we deliver within 3/4 working days. Tracked service. Prices stated at checkout. Larger orders we will contact you same working day to organise.

Can I get a faster turnaround?

Yes. We can offer a 24-hour service for additional 25%. Contact us 'directly' for this service. Either by email info@rawcanvas.co.uk or call 07851 727 992

Can I scale up my print?

Depends on the DPI. Typically we can get an extra 20% increase with no distortion. But if we scan your original you can dictate the ‘target’ size and we can scan appropriately.

What if I’m not happy with service?

We will attempt to correct and make good asap to best of our ability. Otherwise we will refund 100%

Fine art printing

What papers do you print on?

We offer a curated range of archival fine art papers. Each paper has a different surface and base tone (smooth, textured, bright white or natural). If you tell us what you’re printing (photo, illustration, painting reproduction), we can recommend the best match.

Do you offer proofs?

Yes — proofs are a good idea if you’re making an edition, matching previous work, or you’re sensitive to colour and tone. Please note, we charge same prices for proofs.

Will my print match what I see on screen?

We work in a colour-managed workflow, but screens vary hugely. For critical matching, we recommend a proof, or ask us about calibration and soft-proofing.

Can you print with a white border?

Yes. If you want a border for signing or framing, specify the exact border size (or tell us the frame size and we’ll suggest a border).

Do you offer edition support (consistent reprints)?

Yes — we can keep notes on paper choice, sizing and finishing so reprints stay consistent. Please specify in Order Notes

Fine art scanning

What size can you scan?

We can scan originals up to A1. For larger work, see Artwork Photography.

What resolution will I get?

Standard is 300 dpi (higher on request), depending on original size and intended output. If you tell us your target print size, we’ll confirm what’s appropriate.

What types of artwork scan well?

Flat works like drawings, prints, watercolour, ink, collage and many paintings. If the surface is very textured, metallic or reflective, photography may be a better option.

Will you correct colour and clean up the file?

Careful post-production is included. We’ll balance colour and tone and remove minor dust where appropriate, while keeping the character of the original. If you prefer to handle the Post production yourself, and save, we recommend the Batch Scanning option

Is scanning safe for my artwork?

We handle work carefully and keep surfaces protected. If the piece is fragile or valuable, tell us and we’ll advise the safest approach.

Artwork photography (large-scale, framed, glossy, on-location)

How accurate will the colour be?

We use controlled lighting and a colour-managed workflow, then balance files in post-production for faithful reproduction. If you have a specific print outcome in mind, tell us at booking so we can tailor the finishing.

Can you photograph varnished or glossy paintings?

Yes — glare control is a key part of our setup. Please mention varnish or gloss in your enquiry.

Do you photograph framed work behind glass?

We can, but it may require additional reflection management. Send a quick photo of the piece and we’ll advise.

What resolution will I receive?

High-resolution files suitable for large-format printing and archiving. If you need a specific print size, tell us and we’ll confirm suitability. Standard DPI is 300

Studio vs on-location — which should I choose?

Studio is ideal for manageable sizes and unframed work. On-location is best for oversized, framed, installed or fragile pieces.

How do I send the artwork?

We’ll confirm safe delivery options — or recommend on-location capture if transport is risky.
